Highest Peak: K2 (Mount Godwin Austen) - (8611m / 28251ft)
First Ascent 1954 - Desio, Lacedelli and Compagnoni
Situated in northern Himalayas, K2 (derived from the survey number for the peak) is the world's second highest peak; and for a short while, in 1987, it was thought that K2 was in fact higher than Everest. Re-measurement of Everest, by the same methods used for K2, re-asserted Everest's claim to being the highest. First ascent (1954), by three Italians: Ardito Desio, Lino Lacedelli, and Achille Compagnoni.
