Prophylactics and Dosages

Following is a list of available prophylactics and adult dosages for the prophylactics mentioned herein. For further information (adverse affects, contraindications, etc.), please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Prophylactics

Chloroquine sensitive areas:

    Chloroquine (eg Nivaquine, Plasmoquine, Anoclor)
    (these areas include the Northern and Eastern Transvaal, and Northern Natal areas of South Africa.)

Chloroquine resistant areas:

    " mefloquine (Lariam)
    " proguanil (Paludrine) + chloroquine
    " doxycycline (eg Vibramycin)
    (these areas include the Ubombo and Ingwavuma areas of kWaZulu, South Africa, and the remainder of endemic malaria areas in African countries south of the Sahara desert.)

Dosages (adult)

Chloroquine

    300mg base (i.e. 2 tablets or capsules) once a week (on same day each week); start 1 week before and continue weekly until 4-6 weeks after.

Proguanil

    2 tablets daily; start day before entering area; take daily until 4-6 weeks after return take in combination with weekly chloroquine.

Mefloquine

    1 tablet weekly, start 1 week before entering area, continue weekly until 4 weeks after - should not be used for longer than 3 months.

Doxycycline

    100mg (1 capsule) daily; start day before entering area, continue until 4 weeks after - should not be used for more than 8 weeks.
