Rising in the Eastern Himalayas between Nepal and Tibet, Everest was named after Sir George Everest, British surveyor general of India in the 1830s, who first established the location and approximate altitude of the mountain. The Tibetan name, Chomolungma, means "goddess mother of the world". Covered with snow except for its gale-swept summits, the mountain supports little life, although spiders and insects have been found as high as 6100 m (20 000 ft). Glaciers, including the spectacular Rongbuk, feed the rivers that rise near the base of the mountain. Climbing attempts began in the 1920s, after access was granted by the Dalai Lama. On 29 May 1953, the 29,028 ft (8,848m) summit of Everest was conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary (a New Zealander) and Tenzing Norgay (a Nepalese). Out of respect for the wishes of the Sikkim people, who regard the summit as sacred, mountaineers have left the summit snows untouched. Joe Brown, George Band, Norman Hardie and Tony Streather are credited with the first ascent (1955); stopping at a point some 20 feet below the actual summit. K2 (derived from the survey number for the peak) is the world's second highest peak; and for a short while, in 1987, it was thought that K2 was in fact higher than Everest. Re-measurement of Everest, by the same methods used for K2, re-asserted Everest's claim to being the highest. First ascent (1954), by three Italians: Ardito Desio, Lino Lacedelli, and Achille Compagnoni.
